v WPark (a)

we were grreted by a mud bath of a pitch and right from the start we knew we were up against it. We quickly decided that football across the ground wasn't an option today and depsite only being ahead through Elliot's excellent strike, the boys were well on top and grateful for Dannys interventions as stand in goalie. At half time the boys took in how well they were playing despite the conditions and despite some spirited fighting play form WPark. They improved the percentage of ball getting out to the wings and the forwards fully exploited the situation and quickly went into a comfortable 4 goal lead. They were pegged back by a well taken goal by WPark but then went onto to score a further five - two hat tricks by Elliot and Motty a Dom Harper shot, a goal from Nick and a blaster from Max - a comprehensive  victory to regain our top of the table status.

A good match played in very good spirit and a triumph for the home side who played attractive football and were on top from the 1st half penalty calmly converted by skipper Mike Buckley. Waverton maintained the pressure throughout and despite some good goalkeeping from Nomads and good defensive work scored a further three through Harper and a season first for Catford who struck a great shot from outside the box. Motty went on to score his hat trick , fast becoming a habit, and Nick through his persistance managed to get the 7th. Well done to bith teams for making an enjoyable contest.

this was very close to being a tough harsh lesson for the team today...never has it been so one sided that had it been a boxing contest the referee would have bought it to a stop. In the first twenty minutes the team missed a penalty, hit the bar three times, hit the post twice - the goalkeeper made some excellent saves and the game should have been beyond doubt. As it was a single headed goal by Max put us in a slender lead. Half time instructions were well received and acted upon and the team went onto score a further two goals through Eliiot's persistance and Motty's strike which came off the defender. Game over time to make changes and relax......oh no we like to do it the hard way letting them in for two goals which put us under unnecessary pressure. Blacon had the wind in their sails and were so unlucky not to score a third through s free kick..great save Ben who had previously nothing to do. A little composure was gathered and again Elliot's persistance allowed Dom to score a very deserved goal. Another great victory which didnt do much for the coach's grey hairs!!!!

AFC WAVERTON 5 WPARK 1

It speaks volumes for the boys at how far they have come that they were visibly disappointed with this result. They were a little sloppy and should have come out as clearer winners and also disappointed to have conceded a goal but there is no need to lament a clear victory. Elliot started the scoring off with a well taken goal beating the offside trap very well and Motty scored his usual quota of 2 and Jordan Sheen has now started a habit by scoring not once but twice.
Well done on another victory.

v ELTON - not sure if it was home or away

A hard fought victory by the boys who never stopped all game despite looking a little lacklustre at times. Motty scored another fine goal to put us into the lead but important to mention the teamwork in the build up play. Jordan scored a second and the whole team rejoiced for him - it was particularly pleasing to see the team being so pleased for him and surely a huge enjoyable moment. The game was made a bit more tense by the many free kicks Waverton were giving away around the box - unnecessary and dangerous from one of which Elton scored a good headed goal. The referee had an excellent game. Motty's persistance and pressure created the third to bring his tally for the season to 10. The strength of the team though is the sum of its parts and everybody played their part - well done!

Rossway

A very hard fought victory against a strong Rossway side. Definitely deserved as Waverton managed to stay on top throughout the majority of the game combining some excellent goalkeeping with stubborn defending hard working midfield display and some exquisite attack play. Without the mental strength shown in this display winning would definitely not come as easy. A little more clinical in taking the many chances we created would have given the team a little more breathing space. Rossway struggled to make many chances but when they did they found a resolute goalkeeping display and a solid defence. Each and every individual player played to a very good standard - Ben made some vital saves and the defence of Lawrie, Sam, Dave and Dan were as solid as they have been all season - the midfield duo of Gregfor and Jordan never stopped all game linking defence and attack and creating some good moves with the two wingers Max and Dom, who worked hard to create many chances. Another superb goal from Motty who showed his determination to get to a through ball ahead of the Rossway defender and cooly lob the goalkeeper and another tireless display from Elliot who was unfortunate to hit the post from a corner move. Nick provided good cover in a game difficult to make too many changes. A good all round display - well done!!

Game called off

Saturday, October 2, 2010

A big squad for this game so those who start as subs I would once again ask for understanding - there is no particular reason for doing it this way and I will do my best to get you on for the 2nd half

                Ben
Lawrie    Dave    Ross    Dom

Max        Gregor   Mike Nick

       Motty
                    Elliot

Can we remember the training points in regard of the full backs working hard to support the winger - the wingers to work hard to support the full backs and midfield  and Mike and Gregor to carry the responsibility of the midfield and to think of your shape constantly so when the play is forward on the right for the left hand side to mover more centrally and vice versa.

v Hope Farm 3-3

As a team we are not sure whether to feel upset or elated at this draw - we went into the game full of confidence for another win(possibly over confident?) but started a little flat. Hope Farm started as they meant to go on and crowded around our players every time we got the ball. We tried some speculative shots but were unable to break down a hard working opponent. Just before half time disaster when Dan handballed on the line and left the ref no choice but to send him off. This left us with a difficult task particularly as we didnt really look like scoring. Gregor came to the rescue again with a superbly taken volley and the spirits were once again lifted. Hope Farm went back into the lead with a freak goal which was volleyed from the half way line over Ben. Despite that the team plodded on and Greg once again pulled it back to 2-2. We were now chasing the winner but then from a corner Hope Farm regained the lead which left to a frantic finish with Motty just sneaking the equaliser with minutes to go. All in all it has to be a positive at how the team continued battling and getting a positive result but hopefully lessons were learned in terms of mental strength and attitude.

4-1 v Elton

In what was a very competitive but fair contest Waverton went on to continue their rich vein of form with a 4-1 victory. The pleasing nature of today's game was the quality of the goals - each of the four goals were well worth an applause. Motty scored the opener with a beautiful lob over the goalkeeper following an excellent three man move and the second was an exquisite shot from the edge of the penalty area which curled into the top corner.
The third goal was a superb lob over the goalkeeper from the far left wing by Motty and the fourth goal was another three man move which Max finished with great determination and calmness. Another fantastic win!

v Nomads

This game can go down as setting the standards boys! Such was the dominance and so was the comprehensive nature of the victory, that you cannot allow yourselves to drop below this standard. As a coach to have a group of players who listen and do everything asked of them, you can simply ask no more. In the first half you were told to be ready for an onslaught and you went on the attack from the first minute and went into a 2-0 lead through Mikey and an own goal off a Motty shot within 10 minutes. Wonderful! After a solo run where Dom decided to beat the whole of his former team, he was unlucky not to score, so when he inevitably did score just before half time it was nothing less than he deserved.
In the second half you were given the challenge of starting to play more football and again from the outset you did as asked playing some very good one touch passing and flowing football adding a further three through a thunderous strike from Greg, a wonderfully well taken goal from Motty and a thoroughly deserved header from Elliot in the dying minutes. Equally pleasing was the clean sheet following a further impressive performance from the defence and goalkeeper Ben.

The official team report has just gone in - this is the unofficial one. Yesssss!!! Get in - what a beauty to win for the Wavo team in a hard fought contest but one which we ultimately deserved to win. The lads were relentless from start to finish and apart from Blacon looking dangerous on the counter attack Waverton dominated the game throughout. Marginally the better side physically Waverton tired Blacon out and stuck to their task. These games are easily lost and it is a great credit to them all....... from Ben who made some wonderful close range shots to Max who ran himself into the ground. Ross looked really comfortable and full of desire in the second half and Elliot never stopped running creating several chances. Motty took his first goal with the comfort we have already come to take for granted and a well done to the defensive trio of Dave, Sam and Dan who kept it really tight putting in some good challenges. We kept going in  midfield where Mikey played a captain's role and Jordan and Lawrie put in a lot of hard work. Dom Harper had a great debut and was unlucky not to score on a few occasions but ultimately without that goal in the dying minutes we would have been looking at a disappointing draw - well done Greg!!

v Blacon 05.09.10

An exceptionally hard fought win against a very strong Blacon side who made it really hard for Waverton to break them down. After taking an early lead through Mottershead, Waverton were hit by a breakaway goal to bring Blacon level at half time. Waverton had a number of chances to put the game beyond doubt but were just not getting the rub of the green until 3 minutes before the end Gregor Campbell hit a spectacular shot from outside the penalty box to edge for the home side.

v Hope Farm

What a wonderfully positive start to the season with a great performance against a good Hope Farm side. A hat trick from Elliot two from Motty and one for Mike and Brett made a comprehensive 7-2 victory in dfficult windy conditions. The team looked comfortable from the outset and soon went into an unassailable 4-0 first half lead. Playing against the wind in the second half didn't stop their progress scoring a further 3. The learning points from this game were that concentration needs to be kept for the whole game and we have to learn to be completely clinical and finish games off by improving our scoring to chances ratio.
Many positives to take out of the first game of the season
